CARL

So who would die on Boxing Day?

Was someone being held somewhere just now, starving, oblivious to the fate awaiting them, and without any possibility of raising the alarm? Or was it a case of someone walking around carefree among their loved ones without realizing that this would be their last Christmas together? The intended victim could also be a loner, living in their own little world, just as oblivious to the imminent danger. Carl was convinced that one of these theories was correct. But which one was it? How would they find out in time? They could not just announce that they were looking for a ruthless bastard.

Carl had no doubt that the perpetrator had already singled out their victim, and might even have done so a long time ago. But he also knew that the only chance of preventing the murder depended on him and his team, and that objectively they might as well throw in the towel.

“But can you just give up on another person’s right to live if there is any chance of saving them?” Mona had asked him in connection with something unrelated not long ago. And she said that despite the fact that she knew just as well as he did that, in cases like those, they would have to work day and night over the holidays, leaving her alone with Lucia.

Rose did not hesitate to offer the full support of the entire team in spite of the prospect of too much work and no Christmas celebration.

“Of course we’re behind you,” she had said, and they had all put their noses to the ground over the last few hours to prove the point.

Gordon dealt with background research to uncover new information about the cases they already knew about.

Rose’s method had always been to find new ways to approach a case. So if she wanted to fill in more of the gaps on the whiteboard, she needed to uncover new perspectives. She would have to begin with finding new birthdays for dictators that fit the bill. Then she would have to search for cases in which someone had died in suspicious circumstances on those dates. If she then further analyzed these cases and victims, new leads might come up. Who knew the victims, what did they do for work, and what could they be guilty of? And if she had any luck, she might start to build a picture of a potential killer.

While she was slogging away with that, Assad was tasked with following up on lots of loose ends, such as Tytte Laugesen’s scrapbooks and Palle Rasmussen’s computer. He had to finish that before he could assist Carl.
